Written Testimonials

I received one-to-one singing/vocal technique instruction from Todd for several years. During that time, I acquired the most vital understanding of and method for basic vocal technique, such as proper physical alignment and posture, breath control and relaxation. Simultaneously, Todd exposed me to a wide range of styles and contexts within jazz and other popular musical forms. Through listening to the nuances of Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Basia, Betty Carter, Urzula Dudziak, Sting and many others, I developed the ability to discern instrumentation, style, rhythm, tempo, harmony, vocal ornamentation, melody, downbeat, syncopation, and the essential, expressive elements in and of vocal phrasing.

Todd has had many years of experience with singing, teaching and performing music. He brings his musical knowledge and expertise into everything that he does. Whether he is performing in front of thousands of people or coaching one student, his focus and attention to detail enables him to communicate and guide the participants to a mental and emotional understanding of musical composition; never failing to situate a genre, a vocalist, an ensemble, a style or a particular recording in its appropriate historical and cultural origin. His knowledge is expansive and continues to grow due to his consistent and dynamic participation in many areas of the music business.

His accomplishments with the jazz ensemble RareSilk are still widely recognized today. He continues to be regarded as a “jazz great” and has never ceased to inspire me personally to strive for thoughtful intention and genuine expression with every note, phrase, and tune that I sing today.

During the time I studied with Todd, my exposure to music increased immensely, my voice became strong and predictable, and my breath became steady. I gained confidence in my ability to sing, as well as in my ability to learn. I developed a discerning “ear” and ever since, I have been able to dissect a piece of music and understand how various musical elements contribute to the whole composition. Todd’s intense commitment to the creation of musical expression inspired my own dedication to daily vocal practice, persistence and patience. Ultimately, the work I did with Todd enabled me to pursue music professionally. And as I myself continue to grow as a musician and a teacher. I will continue to acknowledge those like Todd who taught me, challenged me, supported me in my endeavors and contributed greatly to my career and my life as an artist.

“Todd Buffa is not only a gifted musician himself, he is also a gifted teacher. Todd spent 5 years teaching our son, Karl, piano and the beautiful nuances of music. He inspired, challenged and listened carefully to Karl as he grew with his music and developed into the fine person he is today. I would highly recommend Todd Buffa as a music teacher to anyone. Todd is very professional, has high expectations and is always respectful and kind as he nurtures his students along in their musical endeavors.”

“I have been a fan of Todd Buffa for many years, and during that time I have had a unique and valuable opportunity to witness and become acquainted with the wide extent of his learning, singing, and teaching. His musical breadth is extraordinary: Jazz vocalist, jazz pianist, instrumental arranging, vocal arranging, composition – I could go on and on and not exhaust the inventory. Todd goes to great length, with considerable ingenuity, to make it possible for students to appropriate for themselves the material he introduces – and in doing so, he brings out their best. As a performer Todd demonstrates a wide variety of stylistic understanding. He is clearly in control of the “Great American Songbook”, but also has ‘ears’ for, and understands contemporary rock, country, rap. One only has to listen to his latest CD to realize the depth of his talent and stylistic understanding. He always opens up my ears when he performs ....... He is a rare talent!”
